Mindfulness for Health
The Mindfulness for Health course was designed by Breathworks founder, Vidyamala Burch, as a combination of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and is known as Mindfulness Based Pain Management. It is an 8 week course that she developed from her own experience of living with chronic back pain for many years due to injury. She discovered that combining mindfulness techniques with cognitive behavioural strategies, such as pacing, made a huge difference to her quality of life. Vidyamala has been refining the course, since its inception over 10 years ago, to make it more effective and accessible to all who would benefit from it.
The course introduces both formal & informal mindfulness practices, the use of an activity diary and teaching on pacing guidelines to improve quality of life and sense of wellbeing. The cost of the course includes the book, Mindfulness for Health which includes the main course CD, the course workbook and other CDs to support your developing meditation practice. The course is suitable for those living with anxiety, stress, insomnia, chronic pain and long term health conditions such as arthritis, ME, fibromyalgia and diabetes.
The course is not suitable for those in the acute stages of depression, if you wish to discuss whether or not the course is suitable for you please contact me.
During the course we look at the issues that arise when dealing with ongoing difficulties, we learn how mindfulness helps to retrain our thoughts, we assess our activities of daily living and learn how to pace ourselves and we look at how we can change our attitudes to our situation.
There is a commitment to practice the ten minute meditations learned in class at home, supported by the CD from the course book and a workbook to record your experiences. The course book, Mindfulness for Health by Vidyamala Burch & Danny Penman is required reading during the course. The book, containing the CD, workbook and all other materials are included in the cost of the course.
